School assistance for children worth 1,000 lei announced by Government and Parliament

Over 295,000 students from 1st to 9th grade will receive school assistance worth 1,000 lei. Speaker Igor Grosu and Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun made the statement today.

The payment will be made by the National Social Insurance House between September 2 and 5, 2025, through bank transfer – usually to a parent's card. “We want it to be a simple and fast process. Children's data will be collected from the Ministry of Education's system and automatically sent to the CNAS. The money will be delivered directly to the card or can be picked up at post offices, similar to the Easter assistance,” Perciun said.

The official said that for exceptional cases, such as lacking data in the system or recent return from abroad, parents will be able to submit applications to CNAS. Authorities estimate that less than 3% of beneficiaries will need the additional procedure.

“It is a new step in our commitment to families in the Republic of Moldova. This money will help parents, children, and grandparents, to ease the expenses at the start of the school year. Support for children and families is not a promise, but a reality. We continue to work so that every child in the Republic of Moldova has a better future,” Grosu said.

The budget for families and children has been almost doubled. For comparison, in 2021, support for families was 2.8 billion lei. In 2025, it reaches 4.8 billion lei – an increase of 2 billion lei in just five years.

Also, this spring, over 230,000 people benefited from the Easter Aid - families with children up to 5 years old and families with children and adults with disabilities. Additionally, from this autumn, free meals will be offered also to students in school classes.

At the same time, since 2022, every child under 2 years old receives a monthly allowance of 1,000 lei. The one-off allowance at childbirth has increased from 9,459 lei to 21,350 lei, with Moldova being above other European countries, including Ireland or Latvia. About 70,000 newborns have benefited from the allowance.

Other achievements in the field include the creation and renovation of over 40 nursery groups and 137 kindergartens. Additionally, maternity allowance is automatically calculated from the income of the parent with a higher salary, and since March 2023, mothers can work during maternity leave without losing the allowance, and fathers can take extended paternity leave up to 1 year. As for social assistance for children from vulnerable families, it is granted monthly, amounting to almost 3,000 lei.
