European Parliament calls for accelerating Moldova's EU accession
The European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs has voted on the Annual Report on Moldova, a document that reaffirms the EU's strong political support for Chișinău's European path.
President of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Moldova Siegfried Mureșan announced that the report welcomes the commitment of Moldovan authorities to complete the legislative screening process in the context of EU accession and to open the first effective negotiation chapters in the coming months.
“In this regard, we request the European Commission to provide more substantial support to Chișinău authorities so that these objectives are achieved, and the accession process is accelerated. In the context of threats from Russia towards the European Union and neighboring countries, accelerating the European integration of Moldova, as well as Ukraine, must become a strategic priority for the EU in the forthcoming period,” said Mureșan.
The MEP also mentioned that a permanent liberalization of trade between the EU and Moldova has been requested.
“This measure would replace the current temporary liberalization, set following Russia's initiation of the war in Ukraine, which allowed Moldovan agricultural products—deprived of access to eastern markets—to be redirected to the European market. The temporary liberalization has already led to a significant increase in Moldovan agricultural exports to the EU, benefiting local producers. However, a permanent liberalization would provide more predictability for local producers and increase investor confidence in Moldova's economy,” the official concluded.
After today's vote in the Foreign Affairs Committee, the report is set to be put to a final vote in the European Parliament plenary in June.
