Tourism integrated into state’s economic policies in Moldova; sector moves to Economic Development and Digitalization Ministry

The tourism sector will be transferred to Economic Development and Digitalization Ministry, as part of an institutional reorganization process that aims to integrate it into a broader framework of public policies focused on economic development, investment, competitiveness and the promotion of Moldova.

The project was approved at the government meeting today.

Authorities say that this change does not affect the cultural component of tourism, which stays essential for enhancing the national identity and cultural heritage.

Culture Minister Cristian Jardan said that the transfer aims at better integrating the tourism sector into the state’s economic policies, without separating it from its cultural dimension.

“This transfer does not mean separating tourism from its cultural component, which remains essential for the identity and promotion of Moldova. In fact, this adjustment seeks a better integration of tourism into policies for economic development, investment, competitiveness and promotion of the country,” the minister stressed.

For his part, Deputy Prime Minister, Economic Development and Digitalization Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu emphasized that the institution would continue close cooperation with the Culture Ministry on projects aimed at leveraging cultural heritage.

“We will remain in close cooperation with the Culture Ministry, as the tourism sector also includes a cultural component, and we already have ongoing projects with foreign partners for promoting our cultural heritage,” the official noted.

Tourism is one of the sectors with significant development potential in Moldova, being closely linked both to the national economy and to promoting the country’s image abroad. In recent years, the authorities have sought to capitalize on cultural, wine and rural heritage as the main attractions for visitors.
