Phone scams worth over 4 million lei recorded in Moldova in just a few days

Law-enforcers on June 12-14 recorded 28 cases of phone fraud, with the total damage estimated at 4 million lei. Six cases out of these cases were committed during the weekend, while the rest had been carried out earlier.

On the same period, thanks to citizens’ vigilance, 346 fraud attempts were prevented, thereby avoiding significant financial losses.

According to the police, the scammers tried to convince victims to transfer money or to take out loans fraudulently.

Law-enforcers notes that, in many cases, victims notified the authorities days or even months later, which greatly reduced the chances of blocking the transfers and identifying the perpetrators. At the same time, there is a trend of long-term psychological manipulation, in which individuals are gradually influenced to carry out repeated transactions.

The police remind citizens not to provide personal or banking data over the phone, not to make transfers at the request of unknown persons and to immediately report any attempted fraud.
