Gross Domestic Product slightly up in first quarter of 2026: sectors with largest contribution

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased in real terms by 0.4% in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2025. The National Statistics Bureau (BNS) presented the information today.

According to the BNS, in the first quarter of 2026, the total gross value added in the economy, with a share of 84.7% in GDP formation, decreased (in real terms) by 0.1% compared to the first quarter of 2025. At the same time, net product taxes, with a contribution of 15.3% to GDP formation, generated a GDP increase of 0.4%, their volume rising by 2.7%.

BNS data show that the increase in GDP was positively influenced mainly by developments in the following economic activities: manufacturing industry; wholesale and retail trade; maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning; transport and storage; health and social assistance; administrative services and support service activities; agriculture, forestry and fishing; public administration and defence; compulsory social insurance.

On the other hand, among the activities that had a negative impact on GDP performance in the first quarter of 2026 were real estate transactions, information and communications, and construction.

The GDP growth rate in our country was below the level recorded in Denmark, Poland, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Estonia, Hungary, Montenegro and Germany. At the same time, in Ireland, Romania and Ukraine, during the period under review, GDP decreased by 17.1%, 1.5% and 0.6% respectively.
