Moldova takes another step towards European Common Transit System

The Republic of Moldova has made significant progress in preparation for accession to the Convention on a Common Transit Procedure (CTC) and the Convention on the Simplification of Formalities in Trade in Goods. These conclusions were formulated following a Monitoring Mission conducted by experts from the European Commission and customs administrations from Austria, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Latvia.

During the mission, various aspects of Moldova's readiness for accession to the European common transit system were analyzed, from legislative and procedural frameworks harmonized with the EU acquis to the operational capacity of the customs authority and the functionality of the NCTS (New Computerised Transit System).

According to the Customs Service, the evaluation team's conclusions confirm the advanced level of preparation of Moldovan authorities, reflecting the sustained efforts of the implementation team and effective cooperation with international partners. Representatives of the European Commission noted the substantial progress made in a short period and the customs authority's firm commitment to European standards, underlined the Customs Service.

"Behind this result is more than just technical work – it is a conviction that things done thoroughly, with respect for rules and consideration for the public interest, yield results. Accession to the European common transit system is not just a procedural step – it is a strategic move towards a safer, more predictable customs system fully connected to the European economic space. We are writing, with responsibility and confidence, an essential stage in transforming Moldova into a reliable partner at the European Union's frontier," declared Customs Service Director Alexandru Iacub.

The partnership between the customs authority and economic agents remains a key pillar in implementing customs reforms, and process digitalization through the use of NCTS will provide direct benefits to economic operators – simpler procedures, reduced costs, and more efficient control of goods circulation.

Currently, the draft laws related to accession are under parliamentary review, with the EU Council expected to adopt an official decision on the extension of the Conventions' applicability to Moldova in the near future.
