VIDEO // Agriculture Minister: Agri-food sector – strategic pillar of Moldova’s economy, with real development potential

The agri-food sector continues to be an essential pillar of Moldova’s economy, supporting both economic growth and food security.

According to Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Ludmila Catlabuga, in 2024 agriculture contributed 7.1% to GDP, and together with the food industry, the sector’s share amounted to approximately 14% of the national economy.

“These figures confirm that the agri-food sector is not only a driver of production, but also a vital element for the country’s economic and social stability,” the minister noted.

The sector is particularly important for foreign trade and the labor market. Official statistics show that over 45% of national exports come from agri-food products, while the sector provides approximately 18% of jobs nationwide. In addition, 69% of the country’s territory is used for agriculture, underlining the crucial role of farmland in rural and economic development.

Ludmila Catlabuga also highlighted that the dynamics of financing applications, farmers’ involvement through co-financing, and constant investments in the modernization of agricultural technologies demonstrate an active, functional sector with real development potential. “

This evolution shows us that agriculture and the food industry can be the main driver of sustainable progress and of strengthening the Republic of Moldova’s position on international markets,” the minister added.

The authorities continue to support the modernization of the sector through financing programs and investment incentives, in order to maintain the competitiveness of agri-food products and meet the demands of external markets.
