Meter Aid programme: Moldovan state starts paying heating compensation for last January

The state started paying heating compensation for last January on February 9, as part of the “Meter Aid” programme. Payments are transferred to beneficiaries’ bank cards and, starting February 10, they can also be collected at post offices.

According to the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, for January, financial support is provided is to 621,873 households, which means approximately 1.24 million people, with the number of beneficiaries increasing compared to the previous month.

Most of the compensation is allocated to households that use solid fuels, followed by the ones that heat with natural gas, district heating and electricity.

According to the authorities, about 53 per cent of eligible households will receive the maximum level of compensation. Minister of Labour and Social Protection Natalia Plugaru said that the government continued to support the population during the cold season, combining financial assistance with energy-efficiency programmes meant to reduce long-term vulnerability.

The Meter Aid programme targets, in particular, vulnerable households, including pensioners, children and young people, persons with disabilities and unemployed people. Eligibility and the amount of compensation are determined through the Energy Vulnerability information system, which analyses data from more state databases.

The programme is technically supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the government of Italy and helps reduce energy poverty in Moldova.
