DOC // Moldova joins European Patent Convention: streamlined procedures and lower costs for inventors

Inventors from the Republic of Moldova will be able to benefit from a single procedure for granting European patents. This opportunity will be available after the Republic of Moldova has acceded to the European Patent Convention (EPC). The law providing for this, as well as the presidential decree on its promulgation were published in the Official Journal today.

The main objective of joining the EPC is to ensure integration into the European patent system, giving inventors, researchers and enterprises from the Republic of Moldova access to a harmonized system for obtaining patent protection in Europe.

At present, our country is part of the EPC on the basis of a cooperation mechanism that entered into force in 2015. With the accession to the Convention, the Republic of Moldova will be able to participate in the centralized European patent granting system and will be represented on the Administrative Council of the European Patent Organisation, alongside the other 39 states that are parties to the Convention.

The European Patent Convention aims to establish a unified patent system in Europe by creating a single procedure for granting patents for all member states. Other objectives of the EPC include simplifying and harmonizing the process of obtaining patent protection in Europe, ensuring high-quality patents with legal validity, promoting innovation and technological progress, facilitating access to patent rights on the European market, and strengthening cooperation between European states in the field of intellectual property.
