Fallen soldiers of Afghan war commemorated in Parliament

On February 15, the Republic of Moldova marks the Day of Remembrance of the Fallen in the Afghan War. This year marks 37 years since the end of this conflict, in which over 12,000 Moldovan citizens took part. In this context, during today’s parliamentary meeting, the MPs observed a moment of silence in memory of those who lost their lives in this war.

At the opening of the plenary meeting, Speaker Igor Grosu emphasized that this page of history has left deep marks on the fate of thousands of families in Moldova.

“Of the nearly 13,000 Moldovans who took part in the war, 310 young people, barely 20 years old, lost their lives far from home, in a conflict that did not belong to them. Approximately 700 young people were wounded, and another 12,000 returned with physical and psychological scars of the war. Today our thoughts are with the veterans who survived, as well as with the families of those who fell on the front,” Grosu said.

The war in Afghanistan began on December 25, 1979, when Soviet troops intervened in the country, and lasted nine years, being the longest conflict of the Soviet Union. Soviet troops were withdrawn on February 15, 1989. Many of those who returned home were marked by the traumas of war, facing serious health problems.

February 15 is declared in the Republic of Moldova as the Day of Remembrance of the Fallen in the Afghan War, serving as a moment of reflection on the sacrifices made and the importance of peace.
