PHOTO Two new forests take root on banks of Dniester: green hope for Moldova's future
Two young forests, recently planted on the banks of the Dniester River, show promising signs of environmental regeneration as part of national reforestation efforts. Minister of Environment Sergiu Lazarencu has paid a working visit to the Dubasari district, where he inspected the two plantations. The minister described them as clear examples of the power of collective action and the benefits of investing in nature.
At Parata, on an area of nine hectares, a poplar forest was planted in the last spring, with an impressive success rate of over 90 per cent. This achievement shows the professionalism of the teams involved and contributes to increasing the rate of afforestation in Moldova, while strengthening the banks of the Dniester River and restoring affected ecosystems.
The minister also visited the Pohrebea area, locally known as the “island of happy cows,” a space with unique historical and ecological significance. Affected in recent years by fires and erosion of the Dniester banks, the area was at risk of complete degradation. In the context, through the Reforest Moldova project, funded by the Environmental Fund, over 9,000 trees from 20 native species were planted to combat soil erosion, stimulate biodiversity restoration and bring life back to a vulnerable region.
“Every tree planted is a promise that Moldova's nature has a future. If we choose to protect it, together, we can build a healthy environment for everybody,” said Sergiu Lazarencu.
The two plantations symbolize the ecological rebirth of the Dniester banks and prove that, through sustained involvement, nature can be revitalized. Thus, the forests at Parata and Pohrebea become not only barriers against degradation, but also beacons of hope for a greener future of Moldova.
