Road Fund 2026 implemented
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea announced today the implementation of the Road Fund for 2026, following the approval of the Government decision on the allocation of financial resources from the national budget.
According to the official, for this year an initial amount of 1.8 billion lei has been allocated for national public roads, with the fund to be supplemented over the course of the year, depending on budget revisions that are usually carried out in July and November.
“We have put the Road Fund for 2026 into operation. This year we decided that all tenders will be organized in the first half of the year. Even if at the initial stage we are talking about 1.8 billion lei, later, at the time of budget revisions, the fund will be supplemented from the national budget. What is important is to start as early as possible the procedures and the works so eagerly awaited by citizens,” said Vladimir Bolea.
Allocation of funds: maintenance, safety and regional roads
The minister said that out of the total amount, 176 million lei will be used for maintenance works for the approximately 5,963 km of national public roads; 133 million lei are earmarked for preparatory and road safety works on regional roads, covering around 230 km.
The list of targeted sections will be published in order to ensure transparency of the process and monitoring by citizens.
“The decision on the distribution of financial resources from the Road Fund essentially means how we spend every leu from our national budget, with accountability and responsibility towards citizens. We will continue to apply a rigorous method for allocating public money,” the Deputy Prime Minister underlined.
“Without good roads there are no investments”
Vladimir Bolea emphasized that the development of road infrastructure is a basic condition for attracting investments and reducing regional disparities.
“Infrastructure is not a luxury, and the Ministry of Infrastructure does not treat road construction as a PR exercise. It is a necessity. Without good roads there can be no solid private investments, no sustainable economic development. The number one problem remains the lack of quality roads,” the minister stated.
He noted that the Republic of Moldova has approximately 6,000 km of national roads, for which a national plan for construction, repair and maintenance has been implemented since 2022. In the period 2022–2025, approximately 450 km of national roads have been put into operation, financed both from domestic and external sources.
At the same time, the minister recalled that, at national level, the Republic of Moldova has approximately 43,000 km of roads, many of which cross localities.
Europe is near program continues in 2026
In 2025, for the first time, Europe is near program was launched, aimed at modernizing local roads. According to the minister, more than 2,500 km of quality national roads and approximately 250 km of roads in localities were built or rehabilitated under this program.
The program will continue in 2026, in parallel with the projects included in the national plan for public roads.
“The Ministry and the Government are demonstrating a systemic and comprehensive approach. We are trying to intervene where the condition of the roads endangers people’s safety and to allocate resources fairly, based on data and real needs,” Bolea explained.
Public oversight and zero tolerance for non-compliant works
Bolea insisted that every leu from the Road Fund comes from the national budget and must be spent with utmost prudence.
“Every leu from the Road Fund is our money, the money of every citizen of the Republic of Moldova. That is why control is essential. I thank the mayors, district presidents and citizens who send us images when they notice irregularities on construction sites. This information is immediately forwarded to the National Road Administration, and regional inspectors intervene promptly,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
He explained that in cases where contractors do not properly fulfill their contractual obligations, the acceptance reports may be refused and payments suspended, and the reconstruction of non-compliant works becomes the responsibility of the economic operator.
By implementing the Road Fund 2026, the authorities aim to accelerate construction and maintenance works, reduce road safety risks and strengthen a modern infrastructure considered essential for the economic development and regional balance of the Republic of Moldova.
The Government of the Republic of Moldova today approved the Program on the allocation of Road Fund resources for national public roads for 2026, a document that sets the funding priorities for the maintenance, repair and modernization of road infrastructure.
Referring to the need for European standards for the transport network, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu stressed the importance of the quality of works and of the proper management of public money.
“Our gateways to Europe, such as the route to Leușeni, must reflect the quality we strive for. I will have zero tolerance for acts of corruption and I demand the use of modern technologies to ensure the durability of these roads. At the same time, funds must be prepared in advance so that works can begin as soon as the weather allows,” the Prime Minister said during the Cabinet meeting.
