Moldovan PM makes statements on government's priorities, expectations concerning implementation of project in roads' sector
The government of Moldova, at today’s meeting, approved a programme on the allocation of the Road Fund resources for 2026, a project aimed at the maintenance, rehabilitation and modernization of national public roads. In the context, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu made detailed statements about the government’s priorities and expectations regarding the implementation of this project.
“Like many of you, I’m also a driver and I have noticed what happened to the roads after the winter. Some roads have held up better than others. As I have already said, when returning from Ukraine, I was impressed by the quality of our roads which, finally, at least on the Otaci–Soroca–Balti section, are of European quality, with a well-lit carriageway. But there are other sections as well; people are now talking about our gateway to Europe, towards Leuseni, which is in poor condition. Of course, it is an older road that we must rebuild and there are other roads too,” the official said.
The PM underlined the need to use the most modern technologies in roads’ construction and repair, in order to ensure durability and efficiency.
“On my behalf, one request – let us use the most modern technologies, because I have also noticed that some roads here last longer than others. I believe this is somehow correlated with the different governments that built roads in different ways, so to speak. Now, we must do everything correctly and use modern technologies,” Munteanu emphasized.
The prime minister stressed that transparency and integrity in the management of public funds represented an essential priority.
“I want to say, regarding the quality of governance: there will be zero tolerance to any act of influence peddling or corruption and I urge all colleagues in all agencies and in civil society to keep watch – this is our money. This is our image; it is our European path directly and indirectly. We cannot allow things that would ruin or undermine our European trajectory,” the PM noted.
Alexandru Munteanu also highlighted the importance of carrying out the works according to schedule, to take advantage of favorable weather conditions and avoid delays.
“It is very important this year to do everything on time, when the weather allows it. We are in constant discussions and have plans with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, with Mr. Bolea. The Finance Ministry has allocated or earmarked additional funds in the treasury, so that we can start road repairs not at the end of summer, but in spring. This is a very important project and we must implement it successfully, with flying colors,” Munteanu concluded.
The 2026 Roads’ Fund Program provides for the allocation of over 1.82 billion lei for the maintenance and rehabilitation of national roads. The funds will be used for routine summer and winter maintenance, periodic and capital repairs, bridge reinforcement, modernization of roads’ infrastructure and the application of modern technologies, in order to ensure the durability of the road surface.
The government emphasizes that the Roads’ Fund project represents an important stage in the development of national road infrastructure and in moving closer to European standards, with a focus on quality, transparency and efficient management of public resources.
