Activity of Zoos to be regulated by new law
The activity of zoos will be regulated by a new law, harmonized with European Union legislation. The parliamentary committee for environment, climate and green transition proposes that the Legislature examine the document in the first reading.
The draft of the new law on zoos was developed by the Ministry of Environment and transposes into national legislation the European directive on wild animals in zoos, which establishes the legal framework for the authorization and control of zoos for the purpose of biodiversity conservation and protection of wild species.
In this regard, the legislation will introduce minimum standards for authorizing the operation of zoos, conducting periodic inspections, as well as ensuring animal welfare and public education. Thus, a clear, efficient and applicable mechanism for the authorization and supervision of zoos will be created. Following the adoption of the new law, rules will be established on the record-keeping and registration of animals held in zoos, and the management of collection lists will become mandatory.
At present, the activity of zoos is regulated by a law adopted in 2007, which is no longer up to date.
After its adoption, the new law will enter into force six months after its publication in the Official Journal.
