Political crisis in Bucharest does not change relations with Chisinau; Moldova's parliament speaker says Moldovans to be treated like brothers, as always

The Moldovan authorities expect relations between Moldova and Romania to remain just as close, regardless of the political parties that come to power. “We will be treated like brothers, as we have always been,” said Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu.

At the ‘’360 Degrees’’ programme on Radio Moldova, Igor Grosu commented on the possible political changes in Romania and the rise of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians party. He said that he did not believe in a change of direction of the Romanian state in relation to Moldova.

“I believe that this is not what Romania wants; this is not what the Romanian people want, this is not what the President of Romania Nicusor Dan wants; this is not what the pro-European political class in Romania wants,” Grosu said.

The speaker noted that the Moldovan authorities had been constantly reassured that the support provided to Moldova would continue, regardless of the composition of the future Romanian government.

“We have been reassured every time that, regardless of the political changes taking place in Romania, when it comes to Moldova, there is alignment irrespective of parties, and we will be treated like brothers, as we have always been,” Igor Grosu said.

The official also highlighted the cooperation with the former Romania’s government, noting that more joint projects had been launched at a rapid pace.

“We worked very well with the Bolojan government; we launched very important projects at an enviable speed and, regardless of how things evolve, there will be good cooperation going forward on all these projects,” the parliament speaker concluded.

The government led by Ilie Bolojan was dismissed after the motion of no confidence submitted by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians and the Social Democratic Party on May 5 had been approved by the Romanian Parliament, with 281 votes of deputies and senators. It is one of the highest tallies recorded for a motion of no confidence in the post-1989 period.

Ilie Bolojan thus becomes the seventh Romanian prime minister to be dismissed through a motion of no confidence after the 1989 Revolution. Over the years, the same procedure has led to the dismissal of governments headed by Emil Boc, Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu, Sorin Grindeanu, Viorica Dancila, Ludovic Orban and Florin Citu.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu on May 12 is to Romanian head of state Nicusor Dan, on the sidelines of the Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum, which is opening its proceedings in Bucharest.

The discussions between the two officials are expected to focus on bilateral cooperation, regional security and the European path of Moldova, in the context of security challenges in the Black Sea and Balkans region.
