Chisinau, 18 Dec. /MOLDPRES/- Apele Moldovei Agency will be reorganized. A decision to this effect was taken today during the cabinet meeting. Following this measure, the Agency will be transformed into the Public Institution National Administration "Apele Moldovei". The measure provides for improving the management of water resources in the country, contributing to food security, access to drinking water, flood risk prevention, as well as to the sustainable development of the economy.
"The management of water resources is a strategic priority for the Republic of Moldova, due to the essential role they play in economic development and environmental conservation. Although the country has numerous water bodies and hundreds of kilometers of dams intended for flood protection, currently only a part of them benefit from adequate management", stated Minister of Environment Sergiu Lazarencu.
The main tasks of the new institution will include the management of watershed lands, the maintenance of surface and groundwater bodies, the monitoring of construction and maintenance works of hydrotechnical structures, as well as the implementation of more effective measures to prevent floods and droughts.
The Ministry of Environment will be founder of IPNA "Apele Moldovei" and will appoint a general director within six months of the adoption of the decision. The reorganization will also allow the transfer of personnel from the absorbed state-owned enterprises, ensuring the continuity of activities and the protection of jobs. The government decision enters into force on 1 January 2025.
