DOC // New rules on egg marketing published in Official Journal

The Government Decision approving the new rules for the marketing of eggs intended for human consumption was published in today’s edition of the Official Journal. The regulation transposes European Union standards and establishes strict control over product traceability, from farm to consumer table.

With the entry into force of the new rules, producers are required to provide much more precise information on packaging units. Eggs will be classified into category A (for direct consumption) and category B (for industrial processing).

Thus, for category A eggs, consumers will be able to identify on the packaging the exact method of rearing the hens: free-range; barn systems; enriched cages.

The new rules also introduce the obligation to indicate the Minimum Durability Date (MDD), set at the time of packing, which may not exceed 10 days from the laying date in order to guarantee freshness.

The document published in the Official Journal also details the technical conditions for rearing. For farms with free-range access, a density of maximum 2,500 hens per hectare is imposed, ensuring at least 4 square metres for each bird. In barn or cage systems, equipment such as individual nest boxes and resting areas is mandatory, measures designed to reduce bird stress and the risk of disease.

Compliance with these provisions throughout the entire marketing chain, including at border crossing points for imported products will be monitored by the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA).
