EcoVoucher Program: lower bills for 5,000 families who bought new energy-efficient appliances

Over five thousand families in the Republic of Moldova have benefited from vouchers worth up to six thousand lei to purchase new energy-efficient appliances. They were utilized in the first session of the new edition of EcoVoucher program, held on 26 February - 23 March.

The beneficiary families purchased 2,283 refrigerators and 2,836 washing machines. The funds provided through the Program covered up to 70% of the price of the new appliances.

EcoVoucher program was launched to support vulnerable households in reducing electricity costs. Director of the National Center for Sustainable Energy Ion Muntean said that program beneficiaries analyze energy efficiency classes and compare similar appliances by functionality, but different in price and energy consumption. “Thus, they can make informed decisions, understanding from the beginning how energy consumption will impact the family budget,” Muntean said.

The current edition is financed by Norway.

“With the support provided by Norway, we offer vulnerable families in Moldova the opportunity to replace old appliances with new energy-efficient ones. EcoVoucher program is not just about financial savings—it is also about educating people to make the right energy decisions. We provide them with the necessary tools to improve their daily lives while protecting the environment,” said Kamilla H. Kolshus, Chargé d’Affaires of the Norwegian Embassy Office in Chisinau.

GIZ manager Christian Borchard emphasized that this round of the Program aims to offer vouchers to up to 32,000 families, supporting electricity savings both in the short and long term.

The EcoVoucher program was developed by the Government of the Republic of Moldova with support from the European Union. The current edition of the program, with an estimated budget of 7.5 million euros, is implemented by CNED and the Ministry of Energy under the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy for Moldova (E4M) project. The E4M project is initiated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, implemented by GIZ, and co-financed by the European Union, Germany, Norway and Denmark.
