Moldovan president's message on 16 years after 7 April protests
16 years after the 7 April protests, President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu published a message saying that freedom does not come by itself; it must be defended every day, especially when threatened by those who want people to live in fear and give up hope.
The head of state said that on 7 April 2009, thousands of young people took to the streets not for a party or an ideology, but for a simple and powerful idea. “Only citizens have the right to decide their future. Their voice broke through the walls of fear - and some of them paid a very high price for this belief,” Maia Sandu said.
After 16 years, the President warns that there are again attempts to manipulate and undermine democratic values. Today Moldova is a country that has learned from pain, that has grown in awareness and knows what it needs to defend, she said.
“The truth, freedom and dignity of those who suffered on 7 April compel us to remain vigilant. We must together protect what we have so courageously won: the right to build our future in freedom and peace,” Maia Sandu said.
