Former Girls' Gymnasium from Chisinau to be restored by Culture Ministry, with support of German Embassy

The consolidation and restoration of the facades of the former Girls' Gymnasium from Chisinau are the priorities of a new project carried out by the Ministry of Culture of Moldova, in collaboration with the German Embassy. The project aims to conserve the original decorative elements and protect the building's stone with special hydrophobization solutions, in order to prevent further deterioration.

The first phase of the project will focus on reinforcing the existing structures of the building. These preliminary works are essential for ensuring the stability and protection of the edifice before the actual restoration works begin.

In parallel, detailed assessments of the building's condition will be carried out, and the technical execution project will be completed, which will guide the subsequent restoration stages. In this phase, emphasis will be put on reinforcing the structural elements, thus preparing the ground for the restoration of the facades and the conservation of the original ornamental details.

Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan emphasized the importance of this project for saving the cultural heritage of the Moldovan capital.

“I am extremely pleased to announce a new step in a significant project for our cultural heritage. This partnership perfectly exemplifies how we can, together, save and promote our cultural heritage. Each restored building represents a saved story for future generations,” the minister wrote on his Facebook page.

The building, constructed on 85 Alexei Mateevici Street on 1886-1887, was affected by the earthquakes from 1977 and 1986 and has not been used since 1986. However, the monument retains significant historical value and the project will ensure its restoration and turning to account.
