Foundation stone for new Flower Bridge across Prut river to be laid in Ungheni on 26 April
The construction of the road bridge across the Prut River, which will connect the localities of Golaiesti (Romania) and Zagarancea (Moldova), will start on April 26, on the Saturday of the Memorial Easter. The groundbreaking ceremony is set to take place on both banks of Prut, according to Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea (MIDR). The minister referred to the event at today’s show broadcast on Radio Moldova public station.
In this respect, Vladimir Bolea extended an invitation to this symbolic event to all citizens of Moldova.
"The foundation stone will be laid on both banks for the construction of the bridge, which will be the end of the A8 highway, the so-called Union Highway. It is the highway that comes from Pascani to Iasi and towards Ungheni. And, on our side, the first section will be built - the first section of the highway will be constructed. The bridge will be called the Flower Bridge, as a tribute to the event in 1990, when citizens of Romania and Moldova were symbolically reunited on the banks of the Prut," the official highlighted.
The bridge will have four traffic lanes, two in each direction, and pedestrian sidewalks. The total length will be 261 meters, and the width will reach 13 meters at the first stage, expected to increase to 24.25 meters, at the second stage. The project also includes the construction of a border crossing point equipped with facilities for thorough control, parking for trucks and touring cars and a connecting road of about 1 km.
The Flower Bridge is part of the strategic project of the Union Highway A8, which will connect Targu Mures - Iasi - Ungheni to the border with Moldova, interconnecting with the National Road R1 Chisinau-Ungheni.
According to authorities, road traffic may be provisionally opened on the bridge starting from the autumn of 2026, while the completion of the Union Highway is estimated for the period 2029-2030.
The investment is entirely financed by European funds, through the Connecting Europe Facility, with the project's value exceeding 30 million euros.
The Romanian Ministry of Transport informed that four new road bridges would be built across the Prut River. The feasibility study’s drafting period is 12 months. The estimated total value for the fulfillment of the first stage of the design of the four bridges is 1.1 million Romanian lei, without value added tax (VAT) for each lot.
