Prime Minister: 7 April 2009 generation proved Moldova - free and determined to follow path in big European family

7 April 2009 generation proved that Moldova is free and determined to follow its path in the big European family. Prime Minister Dorin Recean conveyed the message on the 16th anniversary of the events of 7 April 2009.

"7 April 2009 is about freedom. Thousands of young people took to the streets to defend democracy and freedom. Because they refused to live in a country ruled by fear, lies and abuse. Their protest was hijacked, and many of those young people were mistreated, beaten, humiliated and arrested," Dorin Recean said.

The Prime Minister said that the events that took place 16 years ago are a reminder of the courage of a people who did not want to live in silence and submission, a people who chose freedom.

"Today, our country confidently steps towards a better future, in which the rights of citizens are respected. The 7 April 2009 generation proved that the Republic of Moldova is free and determined to follow its path in the big European family. That is what we are doing now," concluded the Prime Minister.

Today we mark 16 years since the violent protests of 7 April 2009, one of the most controversial and significant episodes in the recent history of the Republic of Moldova. Actions that began as a peaceful protest by young people against the alleged rigging of parliamentary elections escalated and resulted in devastated buildings and mistreated youths.
