Moldovans returning from Diaspora to benefit from extended facilities as of January 1, 2026
Moldovans choosing to return to the country from the Diaspora as of January 1, 2026, will benefit from extended facilities, after the parliament has voted, in the second reading, the draft law on the repatriation of goods and exemption from import duties.
The initiative belongs to MPs of the Action and Solidarity Party’s (PAS) faction: Valeriu Robu, Alic Baraboi, Ana Butucea, Ilie Ionas and Mihail Druta, who have work experience abroad.
The changes include extending the eligibility criteria for vehicles: the age limit will increase from 9 to 10 years, the car value from 400,000 to 550,000 lei and the engine capacity from 2,500 cm³ to 3,000 cm³.
Thus, citizens returning to live in Moldova will be able to bring personal-use items into the country without paying import duties, within the limits indicated in the application submitted to the Customs Service. The person concerned will sign a declaration on his/her own responsibility, committing to remain in the country for three years as a resident.
In 2022, the parliament adopted a similar law and so far approximately 400 citizens have benefited from import duty exemptions.
