Moldova's parliament fully committed to European integration

Moldova’s accession to the European Union is a national project and the authorities aim to enhance cooperation between the parliament, government and society, with the ultimate goal of strengthening transparency and public participation in the entire European integration process. The mechanisms of cooperation and the experiences of EU states today were discussed at the Conference, Parliament of Moldova – Full Commitment to European Integration. ‘’We are in a race against time, involving all authorities,’’ said the head of the European Integration Commission, Marcel Spatari.

Marcel Spatari noted that the current conference was taking place in the context of the publication of the European Commission's Enlargement Report, which confirms the substantial progress made by Moldova and highlights the need to accelerate the legislative alignment to European standards.

‘’We are, rightfully, in a race against time, involving not just the parliament, but also the government and all authorities at all levels, as well as civil society, of course. In this decisive context, the role of the parliament is essential: European integration means not only negotiations at the governmental level or diplomatic dialogue, but also better regulations, correct and timely transposition of the EU acquis, application of directives and implementation of European mechanisms and standards in all areas, from justice to economy, to social protection, environment, education and public administration,’’ the lawmaker said.

Each decision made by Moldova’s parliament will bring the country closer to European integration, assured Deputy Parliament Speaker Doina Gherman. The official emphasized that the current parliament had a clear mission and called for unity:

‘’The mission should be for the parliament to lead Moldova in joining the European Union. We all need to understand that European integration is a common project, the country project, the project of our generation and this project should unite us, not divide us, regardless of age, ethnicity, language spoken, political color, absolutely everyone needs to work for the development and transformation of Moldova,’’ said Gherman.

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov stressed the importance of the European Integration Commission, established in the current legislature, and noted that the European integration process extended beyond a single commission, as joining the EU is a national project. Gherasimov emphasized the necessity for both the majority and opposition to unite around this fundamental goal:

‘’For this process to be reliable for everyone, it needs political stability, legislative coherence and at least minimal consensus in the strategic directions we have chosen and included in Moldova’s Constitution. This political maturity is characteristic of all the consolidated democracies of the European Union. This is a message that all chief negotiators have asked me to convey to our citizens, as we have had multiple discussions, including today,’’ said Gherasimov.

For the first time in twelfth legislative period, the European Integration Commission was established, a specialized commission with 11 members representing all parliamentary factions.

‘’This is a clear political signal: European integration is a national project. The Commission must become the platform where we coordinate the European legislative agenda, align the priorities of the parliament with the government and transpose the acquis not only quickly, but also correctly,’’ said Marcel Spatari, who proposed that this conference be not just an exchange of ideas, but also a moment to reaffirm a common political commitment.

The conference, Parliament of Moldova – Full Commitment to European Integration, is taking place in Chisinau, a platform for inter-institutional dialogue aimed at strengthening the role of the legislature in the process of joining the European Union.

The event is held in the context of the publication of the European Commission's Enlargement Report on November 4, 2025, which confirms the substantial progress made by Moldova over the past 12 months and highlights the need to accelerate legislative alignment to European standards.

The conference brings together representatives of the parliament, government, European Parliament Office in Chisinau, EU Delegation, development partners, local authorities, the academic community, civil society organizations and media.
