Moldovan president has talks with Greek PM

Moldova is determined to take the next steps on the path to joining the European Union. Before us now is an urgent window of opportunity — one that must be seized with clarity, courage and commitment. President Maia Sandu has made statements to this effect, who is on an official visit to Greece and held a joint press conference with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Maia Sandu said that her visit to Athens confirmed that the partnership between Moldova and Greece was not only solid, but was also developing at a sustained pace.

“Our citizens have clearly opted for a European future and we are fully committed to achieving it through reforms, responsibility and results. We are particularly grateful to Greece for its constant support, solidarity and friendship along this path. Moldova is ready to deepen our ties and contribute to a stronger, safer and more united Europe,” said the head of state.

Maia Sandu congratulated Greece on its impressive transformation over the past decade, noting that the success of this country was a source of inspiration for Moldova and the entire Europe.

“Greece has proved that, through determination, reforms, and unity, a country can overcome difficulties and become stronger, more resilient and more confident in its future. It is, therefore, particularly significant that Greece now holds the presidency of the Eurogroup, reflecting the trust it enjoys and the leadership role it plays at the center of the European economic architecture. We admire this journey, which gives courage to all countries working to modernize their economies,” said Maia Sandu.

The president also emphasized that, for Moldova, EU membership was the most important national project since gaining independence.

“It is a strategic necessity and a survival strategy at a time when an aggressor continues to threaten our sovereignty and security. It is about firmly anchoring  Moldova in a system of shared rules, values and solidarity. And Europe itself stands to gain. A firmly anchored Moldova in the European family — dedicated to democracy, reforms and cooperation — strengthens the Union as a whole. Enlargement has always made Europe stronger: politically, economically and from a security perspective. Moldova wants to actively contribute to this common effort,” Maia Sandu said.

The officials also discussed the broader agenda of European enlargement.

“The Western Balkans, Ukraine and Moldova share the same aspiration: to join a united Europe in peace and solidarity. Although each country follows its own path, we learn from each other and support each other's progress. Enlargement is not just a strategic priority — it is Europe's peace project. Through enlargement, the European Union extends the space of peace, stability and opportunities,” Maia Sandu noted.

The bilateral cooperation was also on the agenda of the discussions between the two officials, which, according to the head of state, continues to expand in many areas.

“We believe that our excellent political relations can and should translate into even deeper economic cooperation. Following our discussions last summer, our respective ministers have already started working closely, in order to identify concrete ways to stimulate collaboration — particularly in the fields of renewable energy, infrastructure, agrobusiness, digital services and tourism development,” said the Moldovan president.

Maia Sandu invited Greek companies to explore opportunities to invest in Moldova. In the context, highlighted the importance of the European Union's Growth Plan for Moldova, valued at 1.9 billion euros, which “is meant to stimulate the attraction of private investments by combining EU co-financing with projects in key sectors, like energy, infrastructure, transport, agrobusiness, digital services, and health care.”

“For Greek companies, this means access to co-financed projects supported by the European Union, reduced financial risk and the opportunity to invest alongside European institutions. Moreover, it implies operating in a market with growing demand, an infrastructure undergoing continuous modernization and an expanding level of regional connectivity. We encourage Greek companies to get involved early and take advantage of these opportunities, as Moldova positions itself as a reliable destination for long-term investments in the European economic space,” said Maia Sandu.
