Former Moldovan foreign affairs minister joins Action and Solidarity Party, to be on list of candidates for parliamentary elections
A former minister of foreign affairs and European integration, Nicu Popescu, has officially joined the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) and will be on the party's list of candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections. Parliament Speaker, the PAS leader Igor Grosu has made statements to this effect. He welcomed Popescu’s decision to actively get involved in politics alongside the governing team.
“Thank you, Nicu Popescu, for ruling to join the team. We are sure that your experience, professionalism and commitment to the European path of Moldova will be a significant force in the future parliament,” wrote Grosu on his official page.
Nicu Popescu said that he had decided to join the team primarily in order to contribute to continuing the EU accession process.
“In September, elections will be held for the parliament of Moldova. The outcome of these elections will have critical implications. Primarily, it affects the continuation of our European path, the EU accession process. It is about building a more democratic, prosperous and modern state—a state where roads and hospitals are built and schools, kindergartens and universities are modernized. A state where institutions in charge of fighting corruption operate much more efficiently. All these goals can be achieved only together, united and this joint effort must continue to be supported by the massive external support that Moldova has received in recent years. This support is essential for our European path and will continue only if we keep our clear direction towards the European Union, initiated by President Maia Sandu and the PAS team. In the context, I have decided to join the PAS team and run for the parliament of Moldova, so that, together, we can continue the country’s modernization and strengthen Moldova’s place in the European family. We lead our country into the European Union only together,” noted Popescu.
Nicu Popescu served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration from August 6, 2021, to January 29, 2024.
A former minister Marcel Spatari has recently also joined the PAS team. He served as the minister of labor and social protection. The PAS list will also include maestro Nicolae Botgros, journalist Constantin Cheianu, entrepreneur Maria Acbas, Rector of the Moldovan Technical University (UTM)Viorel Bostan, the founder of the association “Prietena mea,” (My Girlfriend), Ludmila Adamciuc, and Iurie Cojocaru, leader of an online community of Moldovans in the United Kingdom.
