Engineers destroy 23 artillery shells at mission in Moldova's Stefan Voda district

Military engineers from the Codru Engineer Battalion have destroyed 23 artillery shells at a demining mission in the village of Cioburciu, Stefan Voda district.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the objects were discovered by locals in a forest strip near the settlement. They immediately alerted local public authorities. Subsequently, the team of engineers led by Major Ion Golovei arrived at the indicated address, where, after surveying the area, they established that the munitions were 105 mm caliber and had remained in the ground since the World War II. The dangerous objects were destroyed on-site, in conditions of maximum security.

On the same day, the team also intervened in the locality of Talmaza, Stefan Voda district, where some farmers discovered two unknown explosive objects in the ground while performing agricultural works. Upon examining the area, military engineers identified and neutralized two artillery shells, 152 mm and 75 mm, respectively.

In last March, National Army engineers carried out 23 missions, during which they discovered and destroyed 102 explosive objects and 120 cartridges. One of the most dangerous was in the city of Ungheni, where the demining team destroyed two aerial bombs weighing 250 kg each.

Since the beginning of the year, 35 demining missions have been completed, during which 122 explosive objects of various types and 120 cartridges have been destroyed. All munitions were from the Second World War period and were destroyed in specially designated places, in maximum safety conditions.

In the context, National Army engineers urge citizens to be cautious when encountering explosive objects in the ground and to immediately call the 112 Service. It is also important to mark the location where the explosive object was found. Similarly, do not touch the munitions by hand or with other objects, and do not hit or move munitions found in the ground or on the surface. It is important not to dismantle fuses or other components and not to throw the explosive object into the fire.
