Moldova to receive additional 40 million euros on behalf of top European bank for roads' rehabilitation

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will provide Moldova with an additional 40 million euros in funding for the rehabilitation of more national roads.

In this regard, the government today approved the increase in funding for the Roads’ Rehabilitation in Moldova IV project, carried out with the support of the EBRD.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea has said that, through Amendment No. 4, recently signed in Chisinau, the loan amount provided by EBRD would be increased by 40 million euros, reaching a total of 290 million euros.

The money will be used to complete works on several road segments, including R14, Soroca - Arionesti sector (31 km), R8.1, Arionesti - Otaci sector (about 10 km), M3, the bypass of Vulcanesti city (over 8 km), and R33, Hancesti – Lapusna – M1 (over 37 km).

“The rehabilitation of these roads will have a significant impact on citizens' mobility and the country's economic development, including by improving road safety and reducing travel time,” highlighted Vladimir Bolea.

The total length of the roads to be modernized is 86 kilometers.

“For decades, citizens have been waiting for these roads to be repaired and return to normalcy,” said Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

This year, the authorities are investing 3.2 billion lei in the rehabilitation, reconstruction and maintenance of roads and bridges - the largest amount of money ever allocated in Moldova for road infrastructure in a single year. Thus, 2.7 billion lei will be available for regional roads through the Road Fund and an additional 500 million lei has been included in the PLUS Budget for local roads.

Moldova has a total of about 10,544 km of public roads, of which 3,677 km are national roads and 6,867 km are local roads.
