Moldovan PM says leadership achieves Moldova's energy independence in recent years

The government in the last four years has taken decisive steps, in order to ensure that Moldovan families are not left in cold and dark, said Prime Minister Dorin Recean. According to him, the country has achieved energy independence and freed itself from gas blackmail.

“The government cares about the future of the country. In the last four years, we have taken decisive steps, in order to ensure that Moldovan families are not left in cold and dark. We have got the energy independence of Moldova and freed ourselves from gas blackmail,” said Dorin Recean.

The PM explained the concrete actions taken by the authorities to ensure the country's energy independence. Thus, the Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline was put into operation and for the first time in history, the authorities purchased gas from the European market, breaking dependence on a single source.

At the same time, capacities for producing electricity from renewable resources have increased eightfold. In last April, 36 per cent of the country's total electricity consumption was covered by locally produced renewable sources.

Another measure implemented by the government is providing energy compensations for citizens, for which a sum of 10 billion lei has been allocated.

“We have provided compensations every winter – around 10 billion lei in the form of assistance in invoice. Over 26,000 families benefited from vouchers worth 6,000 lei each, in order to replace washing machines and refrigerators through the EcoVoucher Programme,” said Dorin Recean.

Also, the prime minister assured that, by the end of this year, the Vulcanesti-Chisinau Energy Independence Line would be completed, thus eliminating the last energy vulnerability through which Moldova could still be blackmailed.

“We have dismissed ‘invented debts’ and maintained control over the energy sector through emergency state mechanisms – we prevented sabotage and protected citizens. When Russia stopped gas supplies to the left bank of the Dniester, we acted responsibly and avoided a humanitarian crisis and a conflict between banks,” the prime minister emphasized.

The official added that the authorities' goal is full energy independence: stable deliveries, predictable rates and zero external blackmail.
